# How to Send an SMS in Calilio?

You can send an SMS in Calilio from the inbox of any number that has messaging enabled. Choose the number you want to text from, open an existing conversation or start a new one, type your message, and send it.

## Step 1: Choose the number you want to text from

* Look under NUMBERS in the left sidebar.
* Click the number you want to send the message from.
* That number's inbox opens, showing its calls and messages in one list.

## Step 2: Open a conversation, or start a new one

* Choose an existing conversation from the list.
* To message a contact for the first time, click the new conversation icon above the list.
* Use the Find conversation box to search through a long list.

## Step 3: Write your message

* Click the message box at the bottom of the conversation, then type your message.
* Press the / key to insert a saved reply.
* Use the icons under the message box to attach a file, add an emoji, or record a voice note.

## Step 4: Send the message

* Send the message.
* Your message appears in the thread immediately.
* Any reply appears in the same thread.

|| **Important**To text United States numbers, your business needs an approved A2P 10DLC registration. Messages sent before approval may be blocked by the carrier.

## Expected result

* Your message appears as an outgoing bubble in the thread.
* The conversation moves to the top of the list for that number.

## Why is my message not sending?

* The number you text from may not have SMS enabled: check its capabilities in Settings, then My Numbers.
* Your A2P 10DLC registration may not be approved yet, and the destination is a United States number: wait for approval before you text those numbers.
* Your wallet balance may not cover the cost of the message: add funds to your wallet.
* The destination country may not be enabled on your account: contact our support team to request access.

## How can you tell if a number can send SMS?

A number can send SMS when the CAPABILITIES column marks it with the SMS icon. Open Settings, then My Numbers, and hover over an icon to see whether it stands for MMS, SMS, or VOICE. A number without the SMS icon cannot send text messages.

## Can you text from any number in the workspace?

No. You can text only from the numbers assigned to you, which appear under NUMBERS in your sidebar. Your workspace administrator can add another number to your account from the Members page, as described in [__Assigning a phone number to a member__](https://support.calilio.com/en/article/how-to-assign-number-to-new-member-1v29zu8/).
